Many people think CBD oil and cannabis oil are the same thing. This is understandable, as both come from the cannabis plant. However, there are important differences. In this article, we explain exactly what cannabis oil is, the differences and similarities with CBD oil, and what to look out for when buying cannabis oil and CBD products.
What exactly is cannabis oil?
Weed oil is actually an umbrella term for all oils made from the cannabis plant. So it can be either oil high in THC (the substance that gets you “high”) or oil that is especially rich in CBD. Indeed, our CBD oil is thus also a form of cannabis oil, but one that is specifically designed to harness the beneficial properties of CBD.
Different types of cannabis oil
We can roughly divide cannabis oil into two categories:
- THC-rich cannabis oil: contains a high percentage of THC and is sold in coffee shops
- CBD-rich cannabis oil (CBD oil): contains mostly CBD and is legally available from trusted sellers, such as drugstores, wholesalers and specialty web shops like Dutch Balance.
In addition to these two most common forms of cannabis oil, there are some very interesting types of cannabis oil that are also becoming increasingly popular:
- Cannabigerol oil (CBG oil)
- Cannabinol oil (CBN oil).
- Cannabichromene oil (CBC oil).
The difference between THC and CBD
So the difference between the two main types of cannabis oil can be traced back to the differences between THC and CBD. THC and CBD are both cannabinoids: substances that occur naturally in the cannabis plant. However, there are important differences between these two substances:
Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)
THC is the psychoactive component of cannabis. It provides a “high” feeling and can cause side effects such as anxiety, paranoia and disturbed coordination. THC-rich cannabis oil is illegal in the Netherlands (though tolerated in small quantities).
Cannabidiol (CBD)
CBD is not psychoactive: that is, it does not get you “high. It is 100% legal and safe to use, as long as the percentage of THC remains below 0.05%. You can read more about the differences between CBD and THC in this article.
Why do people choose CBD oil?
More and more people are consciously choosing CBD oil over THC-rich cannabis oil. The main reasons are:
- CBD oil is 100% legal and safe
- You can drive and work as usual
- No risk of addiction or other adverse effects
What should you look out for when buying CBD oil?
Because CBD oil is a form of cannabis oil, it is extra important to pay attention to quality. Pay particular attention to the following points:
Buy only from reliable sellers
Choose CBD oil from reputable brands such as Dutch Hemp and Wedihemp. These brands have their products extensively tested by independent laboratories and can provide test results. These tests verify not only the THC content, but also that there are no harmful substances such as pesticides, heavy metals or mold in the oil. This is important because hemp plants absorb all substances from the soil, both good and bad. By choosing brands that grow organically on clean soil and have their products tested, you can be sure you are using a pure and safe product. If in doubt, you can always request test results from us.
Check the THC content
Always check that the THC content is below 0.05%. At Dutch Balance you can choose from:
- Full spectrum CBD oil: contains a minimal percentage of THC (< 0.05%)
- Broad spectrum CBD oil: completely THC-free (0.00% THC)
Tips for using CBD oil
Unlike THC-rich cannabis oil, you can simply use CBD oil during the day. Do start slowly with a low dosage of about 2-3 drops, 2-3 times a day. You can always increase the dosage depending on your symptoms and how your body responds to the CBD drops. Don’t like dripping CBD under your tongue? Then consider another form of administration, such as capsules or edibles. Want to know more about how best to use CBD oil? Then read our special article on the subject.
