What are essential oils?
Essential oils are volatile, aromatic compounds obtained from plants, flowers, herbs and fruits, usually by distillation or cold pressing. What remains is a highly concentrated plant extract with a pronounced smell. Every plant has its own composition, and that smell is what aromatherapy is about.
What we carry: Zen by Zen aura and room sprays
Our range in this category consists of four ready-to-use sprays from
Zen by Zen, each 10 ml. Not separate oils you have to dilute yourself, but composed blends you mist straight into a room or around yourself. The four blends are called Sleep, Relax, HSP and Burn-out. Those are the names the brand gives them; what a scent does for you is yours to decide.
How do you use them?
A few sprays into the room or around yourself is enough. Because they are ready-to-use sprays you do not have to measure or dilute anything. Avoid contact with your eyes. Do not spray directly onto furniture or fabrics without testing on an inconspicuous spot first.
Frequently asked questions about essential oils
What do essential oils do?
They smell of something, and that is what we can say about them. There are no approved health claims for essential oils, and research into aromatherapy is limited. Online you come across plenty of suppliers telling you that a particular scent relaxes you, calms you or gives you energy. That is not allowed, so we do not do it. Scent is personal too: what makes one person calm makes another restless.
Is cheap essential oil just as good?
That depends on what is in it, and that is exactly where the difference lies. Look at three things. First: is it real essential oil or a synthetic fragrance oil? A fragrance oil smells similar but does not come from the plant. Second: does the label state the plant name (the Latin botanical name) and the origin? Third: is the oil pure or already diluted with a cheaper base oil? If that is not stated, you do not know what you are buying. A low price is almost always the result of one of those three.
May you take essential oil internally?
No. Essential oils are not meant to be drunk or eaten, not even a little. They are highly concentrated and can cause internal damage. If you come across a seller who recommends taking them internally, be alert. Our sprays are exclusively for use in a room or around yourself.
Can you use essential oil neat on your skin?
With separate essential oils: no, you always dilute those with a carrier oil such as jojoba or almond, otherwise you can get skin irritation. Our Zen by Zen sprays are already ready to use, so there is nothing you need to do with those.
Are essential oils safe with pets in the house?
Be careful with this, certainly with cats. Cats can break down certain compounds from essential oils less well than people. If you are misting a room, make sure your pet can leave and the room is ventilated. If in doubt, ask your vet.
Are they safe during pregnancy?
During pregnancy or breastfeeding we advise discussing it with your midwife or doctor before using essential oils.
