Multivitamins

A multivitamin combines the main vitamins and minerals in one capsule or gummy a day. There is one for everyone, and there are versions for women, for men and for people who eat vegan, plus the multis for pregnancy and breastfeeding. All multivitamins here are vegan, from Together and Vegums. Not sure which one suits you? Below the products you will find the differences side by side.

Which multivitamin suits you?

For everyone. The Together multivitamin is the basis: one capsule a day with vitamins, minerals and some plant extracts.

For women. The multivitamin for women has more iron than the general multi (10 mg against 6 mg) and 200 µg of folic acid. Women who menstruate lose iron and therefore need more of it. When trying to conceive, during pregnancy, while breastfeeding or during the menopause, have a look at For women.

For men. The multivitamin for men has more zinc (7.9 mg against 6 mg) and magnesium (110 mg against 75 mg) than the multivitamin for women. The iron is close: 9.2 against 10 mg.

If you eat vegan. Vitamin B12 is found almost only in animal foods, and iron and zinc also deserve attention on a plant-based diet. The Together vegan multi is made for that, with vitamin D3 from lichen instead of sheep’s wool. Prefer a gummy? Vegums Multivitamin for Vegans combines B12, D3 and iodine in one gummy a day.

If you do not swallow capsules. The Vegums A-Z gummies contain ten vitamins and minerals per gummy and are sugar-free, sweetened with maltitol.

What to look for in a multivitamin

Check the percentages of the reference intake on the label. Around 100% gives a complete daily basis. Higher is not automatically better, especially if you also take separate vitamins. Look at the form as well: a capsule usually contains more nutrients than a gummy, a gummy is easier to take. All multivitamins here are vegan, and the Together capsules are plant-based and come in a resealable pouch instead of a plastic jar. For a more detailed guide, read choosing a multivitamin.

Frequently asked questions about multivitamins

Is it sensible to take a multivitamin every day?

If you eat a varied diet, you get most vitamins and minerals from your food. A multivitamin is a supplement, not a replacement. For a few groups the Dutch Nutrition Centre does advise a supplement, such as extra vitamin D from the age of 70, with darker skin or if you rarely go outside, and vitamin B12 if you eat vegan.

Do you need a multivitamin if you eat healthily?

Usually not. A multivitamin is mainly useful if you know your diet falls short on a point, for example because you eat vegan or rarely eat fish and dairy. If in doubt, your GP or a dietitian can help.

What is the best time to take a multivitamin?

With a meal, preferably one with some fat in it. Vitamins A, D, E and K dissolve in fat and are absorbed better that way. A fixed moment, such as breakfast, helps you not to forget.

What is the difference between a multivitamin for men and for women?

That differs per brand. At Together the multi for women has 10 mg of iron and 200 µg of folic acid, because women who menstruate lose iron. The multi for men has more zinc and magnesium. The general multi sits in between, with 6 mg of iron. It is a difference in composition, not a medical distinction.

Can I combine a multivitamin with separate vitamins?

You can, but add up what you take in total and stay within the recommended amounts. Read more in which vitamins can you take together. If you take medication or are pregnant, talk to your doctor or midwife first.
