What is Lion’s Mane?

Lion’s Mane (Hericium erinaceus) is an edible mushroom, also known as the bearded tooth fungus. It does not have a cap with gills like a button mushroom, but hanging white spines. It owes both names to that appearance. In Japan it is known as yamabushitake, after the mountain monks who knew it.

Where it comes from

In the wild, Lion’s Mane grows on deciduous trees, especially on beech and oak. These days it is grown under controlled conditions, which makes it available as a supplement all year round. Our capsules are organically grown.

What is in it

Lion’s Mane contains beta-glucans, and in addition two groups of compounds found mainly in this species: hericenones and erinacines. Those compounds are being looked at scientifically, among other things in relation to the nervous system, but that research is still at an early stage. There are currently no EU-approved health claims for Lion’s Mane. It is a food supplement, not a medicine and not a replacement for a healthy lifestyle or medical care.

Whole fruiting body

Our Lion’s Mane capsules contain powder from the whole fruiting body, so the mushroom itself and not the mycelium. Every batch is tested.

Frequently asked questions about Lion’s Mane

Is Lion’s Mane the same as the bearded tooth fungus?

Yes. Bearded tooth fungus is another name for Hericium erinaceus, in English Lion’s Mane. You also come across yamabushitake, the Japanese name. It is the same mushroom.

Are you allowed to say what this is good for?

No, and we do not. No health claims have been approved for mushrooms in the European Union. What we can tell you is what is in it, where it comes from and how you use it. If you come across a supplier who lists exactly what a mushroom is good for, that supplier is overstepping the mark.

Fruiting body or mycelium?

This is the most important quality question with mushroom supplements. Mycelium is the root network and is often grown on grain, which means starch ends up in the end product. Our capsules contain powder from the whole fruiting body, the mushroom itself. That is stated on every pack.

How do I take it?

As a capsule, with some water. Stick to the dose on the label. Most people take it over a longer period rather than one-off, and choose a fixed moment in the day for it.

Can I combine it with other supplements?

You can. If you take medication, are pregnant or breastfeeding, consult your GP or pharmacist first.

Can I simply eat Lion’s Mane too?

Yes, it is an edible mushroom that has been used in the kitchen in East Asia for centuries. Fresh Lion’s Mane is hard to get hold of in the Netherlands; that is why most people choose capsules.
