Collagen

Collagen is the most common protein in your body and is found in your skin, hair, nails, bones and joints, among other places. From around the age of 25 your body gradually makes less of it. At Dutch Balance you will find hydrolysed collagen peptides in powder form: tasteless, so easy to stir into a drink or your breakfast. No health claims have been approved for collagen, so we tell you what it is and how to use it.

What is collagen and why does collagen powder work?

Collagen is a structural protein that provides firmness and elasticity in your connective tissue. Your body produces it itself, but this production declines as you get older. The result: wrinkles, looser skin, weaker nails and stiffer joints. Collagen powder contains hydrolysed collagen peptides: small protein fragments your body absorbs easily. Scientific research shows that daily intake of collagen peptides can improve skin elasticity and supports the health of hair and nails.

The advantages of collagen supplements

  • Skin: supports the elasticity and hydration of your skin
  • Hair & nails: contributes to stronger hair and firmer nails
  • Joints: supports supple joints and connective tissue
  • Bones: collagen forms an important part of your bone structure
  • Gut health: amino acids in collagen support the intestinal wall

Which collagen powder is the best?

The best collagen powder meets a number of criteria: Type of collagen: type I and III collagen are the most relevant for skin, hair and nails. Type II is specific to cartilage and joints. Source: bovine collagen contains mainly types I and III. Marine collagen contains type I and has smaller peptides. Both are effective. Hydrolysis: hydrolysed collagen consists of small peptides (2-5 kDa) that your body absorbs optimally. Non-hydrolysed collagen is harder to digest. Purity: choose collagen without unnecessary additions, flavourings or fillers.

How do you use collagen powder?

The recommended daily dose is 5-15 grams of collagen powder. Most studies use 5-10 grams a day and show positive results with it. Tips for taking it:
  • Stir the powder into your coffee, tea, smoothie or yoghurt
  • Collagen peptides are tasteless and dissolve well
  • Take it at a fixed moment for consistency
  • Combine it with vitamin C for optimal collagen synthesis
When will you see results? Most people notice an improvement in skin, hair or nails after 4-8 weeks of daily use. Be patient and consistent.

Frequently asked questions about collagen

Is collagen powder safe?

Yes, collagen is a natural protein that has been part of our food for centuries (think of stock). Hydrolysed collagen powder is safe for daily use. If you are allergic to beef or fish, choose an alternative source.

Does collagen powder really work?

Several scientific studies show that daily intake of collagen peptides gives measurable improvements in skin elasticity, hydration and wrinkle depth. For hair and nail health there is growing evidence too. Results vary per person.

Does collagen powder have side effects?

Collagen is generally well tolerated. Some people experience mild digestive complaints at first. You can start with a lower dose and build up. With persistent complaints, consult a doctor.

Is collagen powder suitable for vegetarians?

No, collagen comes exclusively from animal sources (beef, fish, chicken). There is no plant-based collagen. There are plant-based supplements that support the body’s own collagen production, though, such as vitamin C and specific amino acids.
