What is CBG oil? About this cannabinoid

CBG is one of the lesser-known cannabinoids from the hemp plant, but it is gaining popularity. In this article you can read what CBG oil is exactly, how CBG compares with CBD and how you use it.

What exactly is cannabigerol (CBG)?

CBG occurs naturally in cannabis and hemp plants and fulfils a kind of stem cell function in them. The CBG the plant produces is converted during its growth into other cannabinoids, such as CBD, CBN, CBC and THC. You could say that CBG is at the base of the other cannabinoids.

To make CBG oil, special varieties are used, such as White CBG, Super Glue CBG and Jack Frost CBG. These convert their CBG slowly, which means there is a high content in the plant at harvest. That is taken out with cold CO2 extraction, along with the other cannabinoids. Diluted with hemp seed oil, this creates an oil that is extra rich in cannabigerol.

Similarities between CBG and CBD

Both CBD and CBG are non-psychoactive cannabinoids: compounds from the cannabis plant that do not get you high. The similarities are considerable. Both compounds interact with your endocannabinoid system, a network of the body’s own that is involved in many processes.

Differences between CBG and CBD

There are differences too. Besides the molecular structure, the most important one is that CBG generally occurs at a much lower level in the plant. Partly because of that, a good deal less is known about CBG than about CBD, into which much more research has been done.

CBG oil and research

Research into CBG is still at an early stage. Much of it comes from small studies or research in animals, which gives pointers but no hard conclusions for humans yet.

There are currently no EU-approved health claims for CBG. It is a food supplement, not a medicine. Do you take medication or have a medical condition? Then consult your doctor first.

Using CBG oil

Taking CBG oil is simple. You put a few drops under your tongue and let it sit there for about a minute before you swallow. This way the CBG is absorbed through the mucous membranes.

Like CBD, CBG is legal in the Netherlands and many other countries. Do choose a good quality oil: pay attention to the percentage of CBG and to the brand. Reliable brands have test results that demonstrate the CBG content and the THC content. Are you ordering your CBG oil at Dutch Balance? Then we will share the test results with you on request.
