CBD oil on holiday abroad
It is important to know that CBD is extracted from the hemp plant, and therefore in many cases (with full spectrum CBD; broad spectrum CBD contains no THC) also contains a little THC. CBD is completely legal in many countries, but strict rules apply to THC. In the Netherlands THC is on the opium list, and a product may contain no more than 0.05% THC. That is why all our CBD oils, CBD capsules and other products always contain less than 0.05% THC. For anyone travelling through the EU or the US this is an advantage, because more is often permitted there. Most countries in Europe use 0.2% THC as the maximum, and the US even 0.3%.
Wherever you travel, though, we always recommend checking with your airline, customs or the embassy what the rules are at that moment, just to be sure. The rules can change. Three things are always important in deciding whether you can take your CBD on the plane:
- Where you take off
- Where you are flying to (and where any stopovers take place)
- The percentage of THC in the product
Taking CBD oil to countries in Europe
In Europe it is permitted in most cases to fly with CBD oil. To Spain, Switzerland, France, Germany, Belgium, England, Greece and Austria, among others, you can take CBD on the plane without any problem. In other countries you may need to show a medical statement if you want to take CBD on the plane. So make sure you are well informed before you leave.
CBD oil on the plane to the US
Are you travelling to the US? Then in most cases you can take your CBD oil or another product with you safely and legally, as long as the percentage of THC is no higher than 0.3%. At federal (national) level it is therefore permitted in the US to have and use CBD, and most states have adopted this legislation. Because state laws in the US are sometimes at odds with federal laws, we still recommend checking whether you may take your CBD product to your destination.
Is CBD permitted outside Europe and the US?
The rules in the rest of the world vary widely. To Canada and most countries in Latin America you can take your CBD on your flight without any problem. In Africa, Australia and Asia, taking CBD with you is not permitted in most cases and you can even be punished if you break the rules. In some African and Asian countries all products from the hemp plant are banned, while other countries require the product to contain no THC at all.
Tip: take CBD oil in your hold luggage
You are allowed to take CBD in your hand luggage, provided your product is permitted in the country of destination and the packaging does not break the rules on the maximum volume of liquid. Even so, unless you use the CBD for fear of flying, we recommend taking the CBD in your hold luggage. This avoids hassle at customs. A cannabis leaf on the packaging works on a customs officer like a red rag to a bull. To avoid having to answer all sorts of questions, you are better off taking the CBD in the hold.
