Our CBD products are put together with the greatest care from 100% natural constituents. And like everything that comes from nature, CBD oil therefore does not keep forever. It is not so much that it becomes harmful over time, but the potency of the CBD and other constituents does decline. Why is that, how long can you keep CBD oil and how do you best go about it?
Store your CBD in a cool, dark place
First the golden tip for keeping your CBD oil in top condition for as long as possible. Store your CBD in a cool, dark place. A kitchen cupboard or bathroom cabinet is perfect. The ideal temperature is about 15 to 20 °C, in other words: room temperature. At this temperature the oil does not clump and stays perfectly intact. This applies not only to CBD oil, but to all CBD supplements.
A cool, dark storage place is important, because cannabinoids do not cope well with light and heat. Under the influence of sunlight and heat, cannabinoids convert into other compounds. CBDA turns into CBD, for instance, and CBD in turn into CBN. CBN is not a harmful compound, quite the contrary, but for the product to stay as intended it is important that the carefully composed formula remains intact.
Our CBD oils are, incidentally, deliberately supplied in a dark UV-resistant glass bottle. That protects the oil well against light. But if you want to enjoy the oil for as long as possible, it is still smart to store it in the dark.
The biggest mistakes in storing CBD oil
- Leaving the oil in full sun, because that is how the cannabinoids will be affected fastest.
- Storing CBD oil in the fridge or, worse still, in the freezer. This makes the oil clump, which certainly does not make taking it any easier or more pleasant.
- Storing your CBD products near children or pets.
Shelf life of CBD oil
You will find the best before date of the CBD oil on the bottle. This is generally a few years after you buy the bottle. As mentioned, the CBD oil does not go off, but because of the changes to the molecular structure of the cannabinoids the potency of the oil will decline over time.
An opened bottle keeps for about 6 to 24 months. Do you store the bottle cool and dark and are you careful with sun and high temperatures? Then you can easily count on 24 months. Are you a little less careful about it? Then the potency will start to decline sooner.
Tip: always shake before use
Finally a tip for getting the most out of your CBD oil: always give it a shake before use. All the compounds in CBD oil have their own specific weight, which means some of them sink to the bottom while the CBD oil is stored. By giving it a shake before use, you make sure you take in all the valuable compounds. Want to know more about using CBD oil? Then also read this special article about developing a CBD routine.
