Does CBD oil have side effects?

Are you considering using CBD? Then it is good to know what to expect. Can CBD cause side effects? Does it get you high? In this article we set out how it works, and what to look out for.

No high from CBD oil

To begin with: CBD oil does not get you high, as long as you choose good quality oil that has been properly tested. CBD is made from hemp plants, not from cannabis plants. Those look similar, but the THC content in hemp is many times lower. As a result CBD oil contains only a very low level of THC, below the legal limit, and you do not notice it.

Short-term side effects of CBD

CBD is well tolerated by most people. Even so, side effects can occur. Some people get stomach or bowel complaints, which is often caused by the oil and not by the CBD itself. Do you suffer from that? Then water-based CBD is an alternative.

A CBD overdose is not a concern, but taking very large amounts (which we do not recommend) can cause side effects such as:

  • Headache
  • Stomach ache, diarrhoea or constipation
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Tiredness or, conversely, restlessness
  • Dry mouth

These side effects usually disappear again quickly. Relatively little is still known about the long-term effects.

Take care with CBD and medicines

Are you taking medication? Then consult your doctor or pharmacist before you start with CBD. CBD can affect how certain medicines work. Be extra careful with medicines such as antihistamines, antibiotics, painkillers, blood thinners, beta blockers or cancer medication.

CBD and pregnancy

Are you pregnant or would you like to become pregnant? Then do not use CBD oil. Too little is still known about the effect of CBD during pregnancy, and in that case being careful is the wisest course.

Take care with poor quality

CBD oil from reliable brands is extensively tested and meets strict requirements (including EFSA and SKAL). Be careful with oil from unknown brands without certificates. There it regularly happens that the THC content is too high, or that there are traces of pesticides or heavy metals in it. So always choose CBD oil from well-known brands.

CBD in animals

Are you giving your pet CBD? Build the dose up calmly, because too high a dose can make an animal sleepy. Preferably choose a special CBD oil for cats or dogs. Terpenes give a strong smell that animals often do not like, so an oil without terpenes is more suitable for them.

Tips to limit side effects

  • Choose good quality CBD oil.
  • Stick to a low dose at first (around 15 mg a day at a weight of 75 kg, for instance).
  • Are you taking medication? Always consult your doctor or pharmacist.
  • If you are hypersensitive to THC, consider a CBD oil without THC.
  • Use CBD without terpenes for your pets.
