CBD drops are one of the most popular forms in which you come across CBD. But what exactly are they, how do you take them and what should you look out for? You can read it in this article.

What exactly are CBD drops?

CBD drops are drops of CBD oil that you place under your tongue. CBD oil consists of a carrier oil, often hemp seed oil, sometimes olive oil or a water-based variant. In it is cannabidiol (CBD), usually together with a whole spectrum of other cannabinoids and terpenes.

CBD is extracted from the hemp plant. That plant is naturally rich in hundreds of active constituents, of which CBD and THC are the best known. By using plants with a very low THC content, CBD oil contains virtually no THC and is legal to use. A full spectrum CBD oil contains the other cannabinoids alongside CBD. Broad spectrum contains those too, but without THC.

How do you take CBD drops?

You take CBD drops by placing them under your tongue. Let it sit there for about a minute and then swallow. The CBD is absorbed through the mucous membranes under your tongue. Once in the body, CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system, a system of the body’s own that is involved in a wide range of processes.

Why do people use CBD drops?

CBD is a food supplement, not a medicine. There are currently no EU-approved health claims for CBD, and we therefore make no promises about it. People use CBD for a wide range of personal reasons and experience it differently. Whether it suits you is a matter of trying it out calmly. Do you have persistent complaints? Discuss that with your GP.

What should you look out for?

Pay close attention to quality, certainly with CBD oil from leading brands such as Wedihemp and Dutch Hemp. With unknown brands there is a risk that the soil the hemp grows on is contaminated with pesticides, for instance, or that the THC content is too high. So always buy from reliable brands.

Also take care if you are pregnant or take medication. CBD can affect how certain medicines work. In that case, consult your doctor first, for instance with antipsychotics, beta blockers or cancer medication.

How do you dose CBD drops?

You take the oil under your tongue, let it sit there for one to one and a half minutes and then swallow. The number of drops depends on the dose you want and the percentage of CBD. We recommend starting with about 10 to 15 mg of CBD a day, spread over two to three moments. After that you can calmly adjust the dose to what suits you.

You can also work the drops into a drink or dish. Put a few drops of CBD into a smoothie, for instance, or make your own sweets.
